Just built cairo 1.8.8 and pixman 0.16.2 as 64-bit libs on CentOS
(default CFLAGS), moved them to /usr/lib64, verified they were being
used with ldd, and then re-ran the 'gt sketch' line in question.
Everything went fine, the picture output was as expected.

I also built 32-bit versions of these cairo and pixman versions (setting
CFLAGS to -m32) and installed them in /usr/lib, pulling in necessary
32-bit dependencies of cairo (fontconfig-devel, libpng-devel,
libXrender-devel, freetype-devel, zlib-devel, libX11-devel) in the
process via yum. (Can you verify you also took these steps when setting
up your system?)
Again, the picture produced by the 32-bit genometools linked against the
32-bit cairo was correct and identical to the one produced by the 64-bit
version.
